Just had a lovely meal at Yorvik Spice which is just outside York's city walls, 10 minutes walk from the train station. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend a visit. Between us we had a vibrant and coconuty Tikka Masala, a smoky Chicken Balti , a perfectly balanced Garlic Chilli Chicken and a Shahi Paneer, the Paneer for which was super soft and creamy, all of the dishes were cooked to restaurant perfection. I had a chat with the Chef afterwards about the Paneer and his tip is to soak the Paneer in water to ensure it is nice and moist before pan frying it, to add texture and a little colour, and then adding it into the masala/gravy. Can't wait to try out this tip. The next time I'm in York I'll definitely be paying Yorvik Spice another visit . Chad ( of Chad's Curry Workshop)
The only reason the atmosphere isn't 5* is because I was the only one in. I have no idea why as the food was spectacular. This is my first visit to York, but can tell you it won't be my last and I will be coming back to Jorvik. I had the standard starter, but asked for a recommendation, explained the spice level I would like, and they did the rest. And in a nutshell - wow!!!! If you live in York and have not been. You're missing out. If you're visiting york and love a good curry. Look no further.
Great little restaurant near York centre, food was amazing, very reasonable. Staff were very attentive especially rana. Not a lot of atmosphere but everything eles was spot on.
Traveling for work I have been to several restaurants around York, as my profile shall show. I can say hands down this restaurant is the best I’ve been to. I’m of Bengali ethnicity and the waiters are so keen to talk Bengali with me. Usually the problem with curry houses like these is there’s always too much oil in the dish. The first night I ordered Nawabi Khanna, which was sublime. The reason I rate the restaurant a 4/5 is the oil content prevented me from having a good quality sleep. I returned there a few days later and the waiter recognized me. I’ve been following the waiter’s recommendations for what to eat as I always order the same dish. I had the chicken and mince dish, the staff curry and then the Naga lamb curry. All fantastic choices, I highly recommend them. Do not be afraid to request less oil in your dish as this makes the taste even better. The waiters will be fine with this! If you go to York, please go to this restaurant.
Fantastic food, highly recommended. Had the pakora platter and cheesy chicken to start with. Loved the Staff Curry with Jorvik special rice. Tikka masala and madras were also both excellent. Great value and excellent service
